Five Steps to Reaching Your Career Goals at Work (Without Sabotaging Yourself)

Spreading yourself too thin trying to do it all doesn’t work! The secret? Don’t do it all! Here are some tips on setting boundaries.

Decide what your boundaries are.

The first step in setting boundaries is to determine what kind of boundaries you need, and where you want your boundaries to be set. This will follow from your priorities and your values. You’ll also want to consider what boundaries are necessary for maintaining a healthy work-life balance

So you need to think about your limits, be aware of your feelings and attitudes, know that it’s OK to set boundaries and not feel guilty about it, and take into account your work environment.

Communication.

After you have determined your boundaries, you need to let other people know what they are. For example, you can let coworkers know you won’t be taking emails after 6:00 PM in the evening.

Organization.

When setting boundaries, it is important to be organized and to set up routines that will make it easier to establish boundaries. For example, if there is a certain period of time every day that you are devoting to work on assignments, your coworkers are not as likely to disturb you because they know that this period of time is set aside for your own work.

Work relationships.

For the most part, you need to maintain professional relationships at work to help preserve your boundaries.

We all develop friendships at work, and some relationships may become closer than others. But it’s important to remember that close relationships can cause some boundaries to collapse.

Saying no, and delegating.

Another part of setting boundaries is letting other people know when you are becoming overloaded with work, and learning how to say no to additional work when you need the time to complete current assignments.

When considering taking on additional assignments, you need to ask yourself if you have time to do the work without cutting into your current workload and the quality of work you’re doing, or if there might be someone on your team who might be better able to do the work, or if there might be someone you could delegate the work to.
